Is Social Media Stealing Your Joy?
Social media can be a great tool to keep in touch with family, friends and church groups and a great way to keep up with what's going on in your world but sometimes too much of a good thing isn't really a good thing. Here are some ways to put down your phone and spend time with Jesus.
Fellowship with the body of Christ
It's great to have your online social circles and church groups especially in this post-pandemic atmosphere but it's a whole different ballgame when you're enjoying the company of your social groups in person. It's so refreshing to actually be in the presence of another and not just interact with a name on a screen. Communication is just so much fuller when it's not encumbered by the limits of a cell phone keyboard.
Reading (or listening to) the word
Whether you choose to listen to scripture in audio-book format or if you're the type that just likes to snuggle up with a physical book, reading your bible can be a great way to pass the time! Many of us get caught in the "doom-scroll" rabbit hole that is social media but think about all the wasted time! Instead, use that time for an activity that can bring you more peace and closer to God.
Pray & praise right where you are
Are you in your car waiting for your kids at the school pickup line? Or maybe you're at the doctor in the waiting room waiting to be seen? Most of us in these situations are content to scroll through our phones until the wait is up. No matter where you are, you can always take that time to talk to God, say a little prayer or meditate on one of your favorite verses. It's little moments like this that really add up over time so keep that phone in your pocket and send Him some praise!
Enjoy His creation outdoors - take a walk
God can be found everywhere, especially in nature! Don't pass up the beauty that's all around you. Put your phone down, lift your head up and go for a nature walk. Take the time to really relax and reflect and maybe even thank God for this moment.
Simply rest
How often do you come home from a long day at school or work, plop down on the couch exhausted and start scrolling? It might not feel like it but your brain is still processing all of the many images and words flying by. Take a real rest! Find a room where it's nice and quiet, maybe play some light music, sit or lay comfortably, close your eyes, and think about all of the things you're grateful for today. It'll help you, in a meditative way, to relax and bring joy to your day. Gratitude is a powerful thing!
Love the people around you
Showing your love for others via the internet is great but there's no substitute for spending real quality time with those you love. Close, personal interaction can really solidify and reaffirm the bond you have with friends and family. This one is sure to boost your happiness 100%!
Being faithful everywhere the Lord has called you
In everything you do, remember to do it the way God has intended. Being true to yourself and your Christian beliefs is a surefire way to lift your mood. Be truthful, give others grace, be kind and understanding and be steadfast in your beliefs. The more solid your foundation, the happier and more confident you will be.
